Col. Cornelius Gilliam, SASS #5875
History of the
Persona:
Col. Cornelius Gilliam was
the highest ranking officer in the Oregon Territory in 1847 when the
Cayuse Indians killed the Whitman family. He led the Oregon Territory
militia to find the Indians responsible for the massacre. He was killed by
an accidental discharge toward the end of the campaign. Gilliam County in
Oregon is named after him.
